自然 Nature
AKACHEN’s love for nature inspired him to create exquisite works of art using precious gemstones. His distinct style showcases keen observation of natural phenomenon and superior craftsmanship. As an example, the shaded subtlety of colour in natural petals as a result of different levels of moisture and nutrient absorption is captured in AKACHEN’s jewelled flowers. His childhood memory of chasing and observing dragonflies has also inspired him to create the iconic Dragonfly series, which ingenuously used gemstones as glistening waterdrops on the fluttering wings of the dragonfly. Through light and reflection, carefully selected and surfaced gemstones are arranged to bring out the essence of life and endow new meaning to nature’s wonders.
詩境 Poetry
AKA CHEN’s Mountain and River Series adopts the artistic conception of splashing ink painting, emphasising the visual impact of colour rendering and splashing ink by precious gemstones and diamonds. This Series is to inject oriental philosophy of enlightened life and can be described in a poem written in Chinese Tang Dynasty, “The Spring is nowhere to be found by endless efforts, with all the foot prints reaching the cloud of faraway mountain. Coming back with smiles and plum blossoms, the Spring has indeed already arrived at the top of trees.”
美學 Aesthetic
What does a sculpture and an architecture have in common? For one, their shared three-dimensionality implies that they are served by a common set of aesthetic principles. AKACHEN takes inspiration from places of worship, such as Gothic cathedrals, whose extensive use of contrast in space, distance, light and shadow invokes awe upon viewers. These visual principles instilled into AKACHEN’s works capture a state of religious spirituality that the artist wishes to convey through mesmerising beauty, when one contemplates the higher power in a reverent state of mind.
東西合璧 East Meets West
European heritage enjoys a new interpretation in AKACHEN’s works. One may appreciate the organic, mystical and nature-inspired elements from his most iconic works composed of dragonfly and blossoming flowers, drawing parallel from France’s 19th century Art Nouveau motifs. Behind the scene, AKACHEN’s laborious handcrafted process is driven by a working philosophy that resonates with the ideology of Britain’s Arts and Crafts Movement. In the aftermath of Industrial Revolution, artists wished to counteract the adverse effect of over-emphasis on machine production and loss of individual expression. They do so by reviving traditions and promoting handicrafts, re-asserting the prominence of human-centred design. In this day and age of automation and mass production, a uniquely crafted handiwork is a work of luxury. AKACHEN continues on the same belief as the innovators in the Arts and Crafts Movement, creating each work by hand, and putting humanity back into the heart of art and design.
意境 Ambiance
The appreciation of AKACHEN’s works calls for an introspective moment, at a slow pace, in a receptive mind. The multi-faceted jewellery design has incorporated the artist’s Zen philosophy, Oriental aesthetics, Western techniques, using nature’s precious gemstones, superior craftsmanship, and new Titanium technology. Through these disciplines the artist wishes to create an alternate state of mind, in which one could see the formation of nature’s wonderful colours and hear the sound of harmony, like raindrops and the fluttering wings of insects, and pay respect to the beauty of nature and the wonders of life.
